Kolkata became synonimous to poverty and miserable life after a deluge of documententaries, televised reports, books and films to such a point that it raises a big question mark in the minds of the travellers of the western world who tend to equate the city with the images of 'The city of joy' or Mother Teresa. But Kolkata is different. It is a city full of visible and invisible treasures, the joy of existence, peace of soul and hence 'Life' above all.
During the last three centuries, the Bengalis of Kolkata, turned 'lazy' by a hot and humid climate and inspired by an unmatched taste for good things, transformed the fact of doing nothing to a true art of living. The reveries before reason, art and culture before business... it is the history of the world the Babus, the rich landlords, who made their palaces vibrate with music and recital of poetries throughout the night till the early 20th century. This pompous life has certainly disappeared but scores of these palaces, mostly at the verge of ruins, still narrate silently the history of that period.
The babus do not exist today but the residents of Kolkata perpetuate the intellectual and artistic traditions with a great deal of vivacity. The passion for culinary art and the unending pleasures of ardent discussions, of poetry and litterature are part and parcel of the daily life of the Bengalis of Kolkata.

With numerous temples built around sacred basins, Bhubaneshwar is one of the most fascinating religious cities of India. The Shivaite temples built by the 'Kesari' dynasty between the VIIth and the XIIth century are amongst the most beautiful according to certain people. The magnificient Lingaraja temple of the XIth century is a perfect example with it's 44 mt height tower.
You will also visit the Brahmeshwara temple of XI th century, the very interesting Mukteshwara temple of the Xth century which is a marvel of harmony of proportions and it's intricately sculpted decor, the Rajarani temple of XIth century with it's gracious and elegant statues. The Parameshwara temple built in the VIIth century is the one which is best preserved.

The walls of the temple are decorated with a profusion of rich, refined and delicate sculptures; scenes of hunting, farmer's life on fields, celestial dancers and musicians and enlaced couples. Situated along a beautiful beach, Puri is the town dedicated to Vishnu-Jagannath, the 'Master of the world'. Puri is one of the most important centres of vaishnavite pilgrimage in India and is famous for it's festival of chariots 'Rathayatra' which takes place every year during the monsoons. This is one of the most spectacular festivals when thousands of pilgrims and devotees throng the roads to pull the delicately sculpted wooden chariots carrying the idols of Jagannath, Balaram & Subhadra (it is the only occasion for the non Hindus to see the idols).
